Book Excerpt: Two Operating Systems

The following is an excerpt from Lead by Greatness.

Humankind is both an instinctual animal and an inspired hero majestically fused into a single, integrated, magnificent being.

THERE ARE two "operating systems" that drive human behavior and that function side by side. They are our defensive survival instinct and our creative, heroic drive, and we are free to choose which of the two operating systems we wish to follow in any given moment of our lives. This choice is the most significant choice we ever make, because everything else flows from it. Both of these operating systems are founded on a need for security and well-being. But whereas one system protects our physical security, the other maintains our spiritual well-being. Our defensive instinct resides in our physical bodies; while our creative, heroic drive, almost divine in nature, resides within our souls. (By the term soul, I simply mean that uniquely human quality that differentiates us from every other living organism.) Humankind is both an instinctual animal and an inspired hero majestically fused into a single, integrated, magnificent being.
